Malta: its flag

According to legend, the white and red go back to the Norman count Roger I, said to have torn his own banner in 1091 to give half of it to the island; the origin remains uncertain, however.

The George Cross in the canton is well documented: awarded by King George VI in 1942 to honour the courage of the Maltese during the Second World War siege, it joined the flag at independence in 1964.
