Norway: its flag

Designed in 1821 by member of parliament Fredrik Meltzer, Norway’s flag lays a white-bordered blue cross over the red and white of Denmark: the country had just come out of centuries of union with the Danes.

The added blue points to Sweden, to which Norway was then tied, and to the red-white-blue trio that stood across Europe for free nations.
