Qatar: its flag

The maroon and white of this flag are said to originate in a 19th-century treaty with the British, which required a white stripe to be added to the red previously flown: a darker shade than neighbouring Bahrain’s, specified in 2012 as “Qatar maroon”.

The nine points of the serrated band are said to separate the two colours to mark Qatar’s rank as the ninth Gulf emirate to join the British peace treaties in the region; the flag was adopted in its current form in 1971, the year of independence.
