Solomon Islands: its flag

Adopted on 18 November 1977, eight months before independence, the Solomon Islands’ flag is crossed by a thin yellow diagonal stripe standing for the sun, separating a blue triangle (water, ubiquitous across the archipelago) from a green one (fertile land).

The five white stars originally stood for the country’s five districts at the time of independence; their number was never updated as the administrative map changed, and the archipelago now counts nine provinces.
