Philippines: its flag

Adopted in 1898 at independence from Spain, the Philippine flag has a unique feature: flown upside down, with the white triangle pointing down, it signals a state of war.

The eight-rayed sun stands for the eight provinces that first rose up, the three stars for the country’s three main island groups — Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao; blue stands for peace, red for courage.
