Adopted at midnight on 30 November 1966, the day of independence, the flag came from a national competition won by Grantley Prescod among a thousand entries; blue stands for the sky and the sea, gold for the island's beaches.
The broken black trident echoes the one held by Britannia on the colonial coat of arms: its snapped shaft symbolises the break from the colonial past, and its three points government of the people, by the people and for the people.
