Adopted on 21 September 1981, the day of independence, the flag combines the blue and white of the independence-era PUP with the red added by the opposition UDP during the national competition that fixed its final design.
At its centre, the white disc carries the coat of arms inherited from British Honduras: a mestizo man and a man of African descent, each holding a woodcutter's tool, flank a mahogany tree beneath the motto "Sub Umbra Floreo", recalling the logging economy that founded the country.
