Red, yellow and green settled into this order on 31 October 1851, under President Manuel Isidoro Belzu, replacing an earlier flag flown since independence in 1825.
Red is said to stand for the army’s valour, yellow for the country’s mineral wealth, green for the fertility of its land; the plain civil flag leaves the three bands bare, while the state version reserves the central coat of arms for official use.
