Canada: its flag

Canada’s maple leaf flag was adopted in 1965, replacing the Red Ensign that carried the Union Jack. Red and white have been Canada’s official colours since 1921.

The stylised eleven-point maple leaf has been linked to the country since the 19th century, when the tree was already an emblem for French-speaking settlers before standing for all of Canada.
