Dominican Republic at a glance: its flag, its capital Santo Domingo, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Born out of La Trinitaria’s independence movement, the Dominican flag was raised on 27 February 1844 at the Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo; conceived by Juan Pablo Duarte, it was sewn by Concepción Bona and María Trinidad Sánchez.
The white cross, asserting the Christian faith, separates four blue and red quarters, standing respectively for liberty and the blood shed for independence; the central coat of arms frames an open Bible, making this the only national flag in the world to feature that book.
