Costa Rica at a glance: its flag, its capital San José, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The central red stripe, twice the width of the others, was added on 29 September 1848 at the suggestion of Pacífica Fernández, wife of President Castro Madriz and an admirer of France, to a flag that until then consisted only of blue and white stripes.
Blue stands for the sky and perseverance, white for peace and wisdom, red for the blood shed by the country's defenders; the coat of arms, carried on the state variant, has shown three smoking volcanoes between two oceans since 1998.
