Gambia: its flag

Adopted on 18 February 1965, the day of independence, this flag was designed by accountant Louis Thomasi and approved by the College of Arms in London; it deliberately avoids the red and green used by the country's political parties, to stay above the fray.

Red evokes the savanna and the courage of the Gambian people, blue the River Gambia that runs the length of the country and gives it its name, green the forests and farmland, and the two thin white stripes unity and peace.
