Guinea: its flag

Adopted on 10 November 1958, a month after independence from France under de Gaulle, Guinea’s flag takes up the pan-African colours popularised by neighbouring Ghana, whose president Kwame Nkrumah was then inspiring Ahmed Sékou Touré.

Red stands for the sacrifice and labour of Guineans, yellow for the sun and the mineral wealth of the soil, green for the vegetation and African solidarity; the order of the stripes, red-yellow-green from the hoist, is the exact reverse of neighbouring Mali’s flag.
