Ghana at a glance: its flag, its capital Accra, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Designed by Theodosia Okoh and raised in 1957, when Ghana became the first sub-Saharan colony to gain independence, it takes up Ethiopia’s green, yellow and red.
Red recalls the blood shed for independence, gold the mineral wealth of the former Gold Coast, green its forests; the black star, borrowed from Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, has become the symbol of African emancipation.
