Antigua and Barbuda: its flag

The flag, chosen in 1967 through a public competition won by the sculptor Reginald Samuel among more than 600 entries, marked the archipelago's move to internal self-government; it was kept unchanged at independence in 1981.

The rising sun with seven rays, one for each of Antigua's six parishes plus Barbuda, symbolises a new era; the red V framing it reads as victory, with black standing for the people and the soil, and blue for hope.
