Guatemala at a glance: its flag, its capital Guatemala City, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 17 August 1871 after the Liberal Revolution, Guatemala’s flag keeps the blue and white of the former Federal Republic of Central America, but turns the stripes vertical to stand apart from its neighbours, which kept them horizontal.
At its centre, the quetzal, the national bird, stands for liberty: legend holds that it never survives in captivity. It perches over a scroll dated 15 September 1821, the day of independence, framed by crossed rifles and swords and a laurel wreath.
