Yellow, the colour of royalty, was already that of the sultan's personal standard before 1906; the white and black diagonal stripes were added that year to represent the sultanate's two principal ministers, the wazirs, under a pact with the British protectorate.

The red and yellow crest at the centre, added in 1959 with the adoption of the constitution, combines a crescent for Islam, a royal parasol and four feathers for justice, tranquillity, prosperity and peace, under the motto "Always render service by the guidance of God".
