Cambodia at a glance: its flag, its capital Phnom Penh, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Cambodia’s flag carries a white depiction of Angkor Wat at its centre, one of only two national flags to picture an actual building, alongside Afghanistan’s. The temple has appeared on Khmer flags since 1875; the current blue-red-blue design dates from 1948.
Set aside under the Khmer Rouge in favour of a plain red flag, it only returned in 1993, with the restoration of the monarchy. Blue stands for the king, red for the nation, and the temple for the prestige of the medieval Khmer empire.
