Georgia’s “five cross” flag revives a banner of the medieval Kingdom of Georgia dating back to the 14th century, under King George V: a large red St George’s cross on white, completed by four small Bolnisi crosses in each quarter.
Popularised by the United National Movement during the 2003 Rose Revolution, it became the official flag on 14 January 2004, days before Mikheil Saakashvili’s election as president.
