China: its flag

China’s flag was adopted in 1949 with the founding of the People’s Republic. Red evokes the communist revolution, while the stars are yellow to shine against the red land.

The large star stands for the leadership of the Communist Party of China; the four smaller stars represent the social classes united behind it — workers, peasants, the urban petty bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie.
