Haiti: its flag

Haitian tradition places the flag’s birth on 18 May 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie: Jean-Jacques Dessalines is said to have torn the white band out of the French tricolour before having it sewn back together by his goddaughter, Catherine Flon.

These two colours, arranged horizontally since 1804, are said to stand for the union of the country’s Black and mixed-race populations; at the centre, the coat of arms shows a palm tree topped by the Phrygian cap of liberty, surrounded by cannons and flags, beneath the motto “L’Union fait la force” (Unity is strength).
