Born from a public design competition and adopted on 6 August 1962, the day of independence, Jamaica’s flag is one of the very few in the world with no red, white or blue: a gold St Andrew’s cross separates two black triangles (at the hoist and fly) from two green ones (top and bottom).
The original motto, “hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth”, once read gold as the sun, black as hardship and green as the land; in 1996 this was replaced by a more positive interpretation celebrating the strength and creativity of the Jamaican people.
