Nicaragua: its flag

The blue-white-blue stripes reuse the 1823 flag of the United Provinces of Central America, of which Nicaragua was a member; the blue is said to evoke the two oceans bordering the country, the Pacific and the Caribbean, with white land between them.

At the centre, the coat of arms carries the triangle of equality, the five volcanoes representing the five original Central American nations, the rainbow of peace and the Phrygian cap of liberty, in the definitive form adopted in 1908.
