Panama at a glance: its flag, its capital Panama City, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Sewn in secret by María de la Ossa de Amador, wife of the future first president, from a design by her son Manuel Encarnación Amador, this flag was finished on 1 November 1903, two days before Panama declared independence from Colombia.
Its four quarters carry the blue of the Conservative Party and the red of the Liberal Party, political rivals at the time, united by the white of peace; the blue star stands for purity and honesty, the red star for authority and law.
