Peru: its flag

Tradition has it that José de San Martín, landing on the coast in 1820, saw a flight of parihuanas — Andean flamingos with white and red plumage — and drew the future flag’s colours from them.

The civil flag stays plain; the state flag carries the national arms at its centre: a vicuña, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia, standing for Peru’s fauna, flora and mineral wealth.
