Japan at a glance: its flag, its capital Tokyo, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The Hinomaru, a red disc on a white field, was only made official in 1999, but its use goes back to the Meiji era in the 19th century, and similar flags were already carried by feudal lords well before that.
The red disc represents the rising sun, echoing the very name of Japan, Nihon, often translated as “the origin of the sun”.
