Kazakhstan at a glance: its flag, its capital Astana, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 4 June 1992, a year after independence, Kazakhstan’s flag was designed by artist Shaken Niyazbekov, chosen from nearly two hundred entries in a national competition.
The sky blue, long favoured by the region’s nomadic Turkic peoples, frames a golden 32-ray sun above a soaring steppe eagle, symbols of prosperity and freedom; on the hoist side, the golden “koshkar-müiz” band reworks a traditional ram’s-horn motif.
