Designed as early as 1945 by the historian Maha Sila Viravong for the Lao Issara movement, this flag became that of the Pathet Lao during the civil war and then, on 2 December 1975, of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic proclaimed after the king’s abdication.
It is one of the few communist flags to do without a star: the two red bands recall the blood shed for independence on both banks of the Mekong, the central blue band represents the river itself, and the white disc stands for both the full moon over its waters and the unity of the Lao people.
