Made official in 1902, New Zealand’s flag keeps the Union Jack of the former colonial power along with four white-edged red stars: the Southern Cross, a constellation visible only from the southern hemisphere.
It differs from Australia’s in having just those four stars, without the large Commonwealth Star. A referendum held in 2015 and 2016 offered to replace it with a silver fern: New Zealanders chose to keep it.
