Flag — North Korea
North Korea: its flag

Adopted on 8 September 1948 with the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, this flag replaced the Taegukgi flown across the whole peninsula since 1945, seen as too tied to the symbols of the old order.

The broad central red band, edged with thin white stripes, stands for the country’s revolutionary tradition; the outer blue bands represent sovereignty, peace and friendship among peoples. The red star on its white disc echoes a symbol shared by many communist flags.
