Flag — Tuvalu
Tuvalu: its flag

Adopted at independence from the United Kingdom in 1978, the flag keeps the Union Jack in its canton, a choice maintained despite a brief interlude without it between 1995 and 1997, in tribute to the archipelago's membership of the Commonwealth.

The nine yellow stars set against the sky blue roughly reproduce the geographical position of the nine islands and atolls that make up the Tuvaluan archipelago.
