Adopted on 22 May 1990, the day North Yemen and South Yemen united, the flag reuses the one flown by North Yemen since the 1962 revolution against the Zaidi imamate.
Its three plain bands, red, white and black, belong to the Arab Revolt and its republican heirs: red for the blood of martyrs, white for the hoped-for future, black for the break with the past. Bearing no emblem at all, it echoes the flags once flown by Egypt and Libya.
