Vanuatu: its flag

Adopted at independence in 1980, which ended the Anglo-French condominium of the New Hebrides, this flag combines the red of blood, shed by men and boars, with the green of the land's fertility and the black of the Melanesian people.

The black Y bordered in gold evokes both the shape of the archipelago and the light of Christianity piercing the darkness; it carries a boar's tusk crossed with a namele leaf, a plant traditionally used in ceremonies as a symbol of peace.
