United Arab Emirates at a glance: its flag, its capital Abu Dhabi, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted in 1971 when the seven emirates gained independence and united, the flag of the United Arab Emirates uses the pan-Arab colours: green, white and black in horizontal bands, with a red vertical stripe on the hoist side.
These four colours, drawn from a medieval poem attributed to Safi al-Din al-Hilli, traditionally stand for Arab lands (green), the purity of deeds (white), battles fought (black) and the blood shed by fighters (red) — a vocabulary shared with several other Gulf flags.
