Adopted on 18 November 1991, shortly after independence, Uzbekistan’s flag came out of a national competition that drew over two hundred entries; it stacks blue, white and green bands separated by two thin red stripes.
Blue is said to echo the banner of Tamerlane, green Islam and hope, white purity, and the thin red stripes the vital force of the people; the crescent stands for the newly independent nation’s rebirth, the twelve stars for the months of the year.
