Australia: its flag

Australia’s current flag dates from 1901, the year its British colonies federated. It keeps the Union Jack in the canton, a nod to the country’s colonial history.

Below it, the large seven-pointed Commonwealth Star stands for the six states and the federal territories, while the five white stars on the right trace the Southern Cross, the constellation that dominates the southern night sky.
