Azerbaijan at a glance: its flag, its capital Baku, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 9 November 1918 by the first Republic of Azerbaijan, banned throughout the Soviet era, this horizontal blue-red-green tricolour became the national flag again once independence returned in 1991.
Blue recalls the country’s Turkic roots, red its drive toward progress, green its place in the Muslim world; at the centre, the white crescent and eight-pointed star, Islamic symbols, are also said to evoke the eight great branches of the Turkic peoples.
