Bhutan at a glance: its flag, its capital Thimphu, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
The flag, designed as early as 1947 by Mayum Choying Wangmo Dorji, takes its name from the country itself: Bhutan calls itself "Druk Yul", the Land of the Thunder Dragon, after the thunder that rolls through its Himalayan valleys.
The diagonal separates the yellow, standing for the king's temporal authority, from the orange, standing for that of the Drukpa monasteries; the white dragon, originally green, took its current shape and proportions in 1969, clutching jewels in its claws that symbolise the country's wealth.
