The red disc stands both for the sun rising over Bengal and for the blood shed during the 1971 liberation war; the green, for the vegetation of the delta.
The version raised in 1971 carried a golden map of the country inside the disc, dropped in 1972 to simplify the design. The disc sits slightly towards the hoist, so that it looks centred when the flag is flying.
