Cyprus at a glance: its flag, its capital Nicosia, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 16 August 1960, the day of independence, the flag was designed by İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher, at the request of Archbishop Makarios III; the constitution required a neutral design and colours, ruling out red, associated with Turkey, and blue, associated with Greece.
The copper-coloured silhouette of the island recalls its copper deposits, known since antiquity, while the two crossed olive branches symbolise hope for reconciliation between the island's Greek and Turkish communities.
