Black, red and gold come from the uniforms of the Lützow Free Corps, who fought against Napoleon, before being adopted as a symbol of unity and liberty by the 1848 revolutionaries.

Set aside under the Empire and then the Third Reich, this flag became Germany’s again in 1949, in the West and later, after reunification in 1990, across the whole country.
