Finland: its flag

Adopted on 28 May 1918 after a national competition held soon after independence, this "blue cross flag" (Siniristilippu) broke with the imperial Russian colours the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland had carried until then.

Blue evokes the country's countless lakes, rivers and sky, often nicknamed the "land of a thousand lakes", white the winter snow; the cross shape also recalls Finland's historical ties with the other Nordic nations.
