The blue, black and white colours first appeared in 1881 within the Estonian Students' Society in Tartu, before being proclaimed the national flag on 21 November 1918; banned under Soviet occupation, when merely owning it could mean deportation, it was only officially restored on 7 August 1990.
Blue stands for the sky and loyalty, black for the dark soil and past suffering, white for the Estonian people's aspiration to education and freedom, also echoed in the winter snow and the country's white summer nights.
