Guyana: its flag

Nicknamed the “Golden Arrowhead”, Guyana’s flag was designed by the American Whitney Smith, a young vexillologist who had submitted his project as early as 1960, and adopted at independence in May 1966: a white-fringed gold triangle laid over a black-fringed red one, on a green field.

Green evokes the country’s forests and savannahs, white its many rivers (Guyana means “land of waters” in an Amerindian language), red national zeal and black perseverance, while the golden point recalls both the tools of the first Amerindian peoples and the country’s forward thrust.
