As in neighbouring Nicaragua, the blue-white-blue stripes reuse the 1823 flag of the United Provinces of Central America; El Salvador dropped it in 1865 for a US-inspired flag with blue and white stripes and a starred red canton, before returning to the original tricolour on 15 September 1912.
The coat of arms at the centre carries the triangle of equality, the five volcanoes of the five original Central American nations, the rainbow of peace, the Phrygian cap of liberty and the motto “Dios, Unión, Libertad”, God, union, liberty.
