Hungary at a glance: its flag, its capital Budapest, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Red, white and green have formed Hungary’s flag since the 1848 revolution; its current plain form, with no central emblem, was fixed in 1957, after the communist coat of arms flown since 1949 was dropped.
The colours come from Hungary’s medieval coat of arms: red for strength, white for fidelity, green for hope; they also echo the double cross set on three hills, an emblem attributed to King Stephen, the country’s first Christian ruler.
