Israel at a glance: its flag, its capital Jerusalem, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Adopted on 28 October 1948, a few months after the State of Israel was proclaimed, the flag borrows the pattern of the tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl: a white field striped with blue.
The six-pointed Star of David, a Jewish symbol attested since the Middle Ages, had already appeared on the banner designed for the first Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, whose blue and white colours the national flag also carries.
