Latvia at a glance: its flag, its capital Riga, its population and where it sits on the world map. Plus a way to test yourself afterwards.
Latvia’s dark red and white are among the oldest national colours in Europe: a rhymed Livonian chronicle mentions, as early as the late 13th century, a “red banner with a white stripe” carried by Latvian warriors.
A legend sees it as the shroud of a mortally wounded Latvian chief, stained with blood on both sides but left white where his body lay; rediscovered by scholars in the 19th century, the image inspired the modern flag, fixed in 1917 and formally adopted in 1921, banned under Soviet occupation and reinstated on 27 February 1990.
