Adopted by referendum in 1995 to replace the white-red-white flag flown since 1991, Belarus’s flag reuses the design of the Byelorussian SSR flag created in 1951, stripped of its Soviet hammer, sickle and star.
Red and green, in a two-thirds to one-third ratio, recall past struggles and the country’s forests; on the hoist side, a vertical stripe carries a traditional red-on-white embroidered pattern, attributed to Matrona Markevich in 1917.
