Saint Lucia: its flag

Designed by artist Dunstan St. Omer and first raised on 1 March 1967, this sky-blue flag evokes the sea out of which the Pitons seem to rise, Soufrière’s famous twin volcanic peaks, towards the sky.

The white-edged black triangle symbolises the union of the island’s black and white cultures, while the smaller gold triangle represents Caribbean sunshine and prosperity; the proportions changed slightly at independence in 1979, without altering the design’s meaning.
